1. Apollonia

From Corfu and Corinth, Apollonia was established by Greek colonists and developed into one of the most important ancient monuments in Albania. During the Roman period, the city flourished but was abandoned by late antiquity.  Including a spectacular mosaic floor, artifacts, and various frescoes from prehistory to the Roman period. The onsite museum has some of the finest artifacts from the site on display. Visits without a guide are also possible but guided tours of the Apollonia Archaeological Park.

2. Ardenica Monastery

The monastery is not set up for visitors, officially known as the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Ardenica. However, there is usually a custodian present for a donation who will show you around.  It is one of the famous monuments in Albania. By the Byzantine Emperor, Andronikos II Palaiologos, in 1282, It was built, following his victory at the Siege of Berat. During the 18th century, the monastery had some well-preserved frescoes and gold and polychrome icons made.

It is better known as an ancient Greek city, although the area around the archaeological site of Butrint has evidence of prehistoric occupation, a Roman colony, and an early Medieval Bishopric. The ancient city now in the Butrint National Park is on a hill that overlooks the Vivari Channel. The joint work of heritage and funding institutions turned the situation around for one of the Albanian important monuments but looters and poor conservation measures meant the site was in considerable danger.

4. Durrës Roman Amphitheatre

Seating an estimated 20,000 people, on the Balkans peninsula, the Roman amphitheater in the city of Durrës is said to be the largest such structure and one of the best monuments in Albania. Until the 5th century AD, the amphitheater was still in use up and was built in the second century BC. It is dedicated to the first bishop of Durrës Saint Astius and is preserved inside the ruins of the amphitheater. Very little conservation work was carried out until 2004 and popular tourist attractions are currently on a list of historical monuments in Albania.




5. Kapllan Pasha Tomb

The Ottoman administrator of Tirana built this in 1820  for Kapllan Pasha who died in 1819. Repatriated to Istanbul, his remains were subsequently. The tomb was built next to both the Sylejman Pasha Mosque and the Suleyman Pasha Tomb which were destroyed during World War II. The Kapllan Pasha Tomb was restored Although also ruined in November 1944, and was declared a cultural monument of Albania in 1948.

6. Krujë Castle

Today a source of great national pride for Albanians, the castle on the citadel overlooking the town of Krujë. This Albanian monument appears on one of the country’s banknotes. By the Ottomans during two decades: 1450, 1466. It was here that George Kastrioti Skanderbeg defended Albania and 1467 from three massive attacks.  In 1478, the town eventually fell after the fourth attack. The castle is now home to an impressive national ethnographic museum and its small defenses held a garrison of between 2,000 and 3,000 men.

On a hill overlooking the southern Albanian, the archaeological site of Phoenice is the town of Finiq. In the historic region of Epirus, Phoenice was one of the wealthiest ancient Greek cities. When it became the site of a Bishopric but was abandoned by the 6th century the importance of the city continued into the Byzantine period. Beginning with Italians in 1924, there have been many excavations at the site over the last hundred or so years. Today this top monument in Albania is at the center of an archaeological park.

8. Selca e Poshtme Royal Tombs

The town was destroyed in antiquity, however, the site is now better known for the associated necropolis. During the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, a series of rock-cut tombs were carved out of the mountainside bedrock. This popular monument in Albania used by the Illyrian kings. During the 2nd Century, some of the tombs were reused by the Romans. On the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Royal tombs of Selca e Poshtme have been placed.

The roughly hewn statue commemorates Fan Noli (1882-1965), this three-meter-tall is one of Albania’s most revered historical figures. It is one of the old monuments in Albania. Renaissance man Noli was a writer, educated at Harvard, composer and Orthodox bishop among other things during his complicated and colorful life. He served as prime minister in 1924 before being forced to flee the country under the sentence of death. Where he conducted research into Albanian history, Noli spent his last years in the United States, even found time to compose a short symphony, and tentatively supported the Hoxha regime.

10. Skanderbeg

Known as Skanderbeg in English and Skënderbej in Albanian Gjergj Kastrioti (1405-1468) is the only beautiful monument in Albania whom all Albanians agree was a national hero. An independent Albanian princedom he managed to create and keep it free for 25 long years. Albania was occupied by the Ottomans, after his death but Skanderbeg’s legacy preserved the Albanian national identity throughout 500 years of Ottoman rule. he saved all Europe from the Ottoman Empire that’s why Albanians consider him the father of their nation. Exactly 500 years after Skanderbeg’s death the statue was unveiled in 1968.
