1. Plan your route

Before using the Moscow Metro system, it is important to plan your route so that you know which stations you need to get on and off at. You can use various online resources such as the official Moscow Metro website or mobile apps to plan your journey. Additionally, metro maps are available at the stations and inside the trains for convenience.

2. Purchase a ticket or card

There are several options for purchasing tickets in the Moscow Metro system:

• Single ride ticket: You can purchase a single ride ticket from the ticket booths or vending machines located at every station. Simply select your destination and the ticket will be valid for a single trip.
• Troika Card: The Troika Card is a rechargeable card that can be used for multiple trips. You can purchase and recharge the card at ticket booths or vending machines. The advantage of using a Troika Card is that it offers discounted fares and allows for transfers between different lines within 90 minutes.
• Troika Ticket: Alternatively, you can purchase a disposable Troika Ticket, which is similar to a single ride ticket but can be used for multiple transfers within 90 minutes.

3. Enter the metro station

Once you have your ticket or card, proceed to the entrance gates of the metro station. Insert your ticket or tap your Troika Card on the electronic reader at the gate. The gate will open, allowing you to enter the station.

4. Navigate through the station

Inside the station, follow the signs and announcements to find the correct platform for your desired line. The Moscow Metro system has numbered and color-coded lines, which are indicated on the station walls and signs.

5. Board the train

Once you reach the correct platform, wait for the train to arrive. The trains typically arrive every 2-3 minutes during peak hours. When the train arrives, allow passengers to exit first before boarding. In crowded stations, be prepared for some rush and be mindful of pickpockets.

6. During the journey

Once you are inside the train, find a seat or hold onto handrails or grab handles for support. Listen to the announcements for upcoming stations, or refer to the metro map inside the train to keep track of your progress.

7. Exit the metro station

When your destination station approaches, make your way towards the doors before the train arrives. Exit the train and follow the signs to the station exit. Some larger stations may have multiple exits, so ensure you choose the correct one based on your desired destination.

8. Recharge or return your ticket or card

If you have a rechargeable Troika Card, you can recharge it at ticket booths or vending machines within the metro system. At the end of your stay in Moscow, you can return the card and receive a refund of the deposit. However, disposable tickets cannot be returned or refunded.
