The main gate for the Gyeongbukgung palace is the marvelous piece of architecture. It is made fully of granite and dates back to 1395. The literal meaning of this ancient monument in Seoul is ‘May the light of enlightenment blanket the world’. It was built during the Joseon dynasty but was later destroyed during the Japanese occupation of Korea.  In 1968, the result was that the gate had to be rebuilt entirely in concrete.

Capabilities of the Joseon dynasty and a brilliant example of the elaborate design, the Heunginjimun is a major eastern gate and one of the eight gates situated across the city. This old monument in Seoul was built as a protection to the important government facilities at Hanseongbu. 5. Myeongdong Cathedral

This prominent cathedral holds the remains of many prominent priests like Bishop Laurent Joseph Marie Imbert, and priests Peter Simon (1803-19), James (Jacques Honor Chastan, 1803-1839) and Pourthie Jean Antoine Charles (1830-1866) and four other martyrs. The steeple of the church is 45 meters in height whereas the main building, made of bricks stands at 23 meters in height. Unhyeongung Palace was used to the residence of Prince Gojong. 8. Changdeokgung Palace

This palace has been the principal residence off many kings from the Joseon dynasty built-in 1405. At this palace, the marriage of nature and architecture is a stunning sight. Many of the buildings here are hand-painted. This most visited monument in Seoul was once burned down in 1592 when an angry mob vented its frustration over the absconding king during the Japanese invasion. During the reign of King Taejong, perhaps the most well-known part of this palace is the Huwon or secret garden that was built. 12. Deoksugung Palace

Traditional Korean design interspersed with a modern touch, the Deoksugung Palace is quite a unique palace amongst the ‘Five Grand palaces’ of Joseon dynasty.
