History:

The church was established in 1527 by order of Grand Duke Jacob of Courland. It had its own bishop until 1581, when the church was united with the Protestant Church of Latvia. In 1617, however, the church regained its independence and began to hold regular synods and meetings. During the 19th century, the church saw the growth of its membership with the immigration of German and Scandinavian immigrants. By 1900, the church had over thirty congregations throughout the country. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Latvia.
