History:

The church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Skaistkalne first emerged around 1648, having been constructed by a Swedish magnate. In 1732 the chancel of the church was reconstructed and in 1815 the entire church was renovated. During the years 1934-36 the church was once more reconstructed and a bell tower was added. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Latvia.

This late Baroque classical style church, of a cross-in-square configuration, stands 27 metres high with its bell tower and is located in the county town of Tukums. The Grey granite façade of the church sets off the three storey tower which culminates in a cupola. It is home to an iconostasis created in 1814.
