There are two main routes for trekking in the Colca Canyon, both starting from the town of Cabanaconde.
1. Cabanaconde to Sangalle (also known as the Oasis):
The route from Cabanaconde to Sangalle is the most popular trek in Colca Canyon. It usually takes around 4-5 hours to descend to the Oasis.
- Start in Cabanaconde and head towards the Mirador (viewpoint) Cruz del Condor, where you can admire the breathtaking views of the canyon.
- From there, continue towards Tapay, passing through small villages and agricultural terraces.
- After Tapay, the trail goes downhill all the way to Sangalle, where you will find lush vegetation and natural pools to relax and swim.
2. Cabanaconde to Llahuar:
This route is less crowded and offers a more remote and challenging trekking experience. It takes around 6-7 hours to reach Llahuar.
- Begin in Cabanaconde and take the trail that leads to the left side of the canyon.
- Along the way, you will pass through picturesque villages such as San Juan de Chuccho and Cosñirhua.
- The trail continues downwards towards the Colca River, where you can take a refreshing dip in the hot springs of Llahuar.
Both routes can also be done in reverse, starting from Sangalle or Llahuar and ascending to Cabanaconde.
