This huge construction and important monument in the Dominican Republic dedicated to the Admiral had been being planned since 1852 when the historian Antonio Delmonte y Tejada stated his interest in doing a monument to honor the Admiral. Despite this, the idea was not carried out until the 20th century, when the working project finally started. For its design and construction, the government did a contest in which 455 architects from 48 countries participated. The winner was J. L. Gleave, who started to work under the supervision of the Dominican architect Teófilo Carbonell.

2. Fray Antonio de Montesinos Monument

This representative monument is one of the key points of George Washington Avenue, and it was built in honor of the famous native’s rights defender. The Homeland Altar is a modern monument located in the Independent Park, and it contains the remains of the “fathers” of the country. Juan Pablo Duarte, Matías Ramón Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez who have a place in this imposing monument as well as in the heart of Santo Domingo. This national monument in the Dominican Republic was made up of marble and it has three bodies representing the Holy Trinity and La Trinitaria, which was the most important movement of the revolutionary activism of the country. The popularly known as ‘Male Obelisk’ (in order to distinguish it from the ‘Female Obelisk’) has lost over the years the symbolic value with which it was erected. Designed in 1936, this famous monument in the Dominican Republic was constructed in 1937 as a monument of 40 meters of height to celebrate the change of name of the city of Santo Domingo to Trujillo City, under the command of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. It is an obelisk which can be seen from every point of the famous avenue. In 1966, the white structure was decorated with the works of different Dominican painters, giving, as a result, the colorful obelisk which stands in the current avenue.
