1. Columbus Lighthouse
This huge construction and important monument in the Dominican Republic dedicated to the Admiral had been being planned since 1852 when the historian Antonio Delmonte y Tejada stated his interest in doing a monument to honor the Admiral. Despite this, the idea was not carried out until the 20th century, when the working project finally started. For its design and construction, the government did a contest in which 455 architects from 48 countries participated. The winner was J. L. Gleave, who started to work under the supervision of the Dominican architect Teófilo Carbonell.

2. Fray Antonio de Montesinos Monument
It was inaugurated in 1983 after having been donated by Mexico a year before. This representative monument is one of the key points of George Washington Avenue, and it was built in honor of the famous native’s rights defender. The Spanish monk is represented standing, on the Advent Day of 1511 when he gave his first speech in favor of the indigenous and against the slavery, they were suffering. 3. Monumento a Los Héroes de la Restauración

4. Homeland Altar
The Homeland Altar is a modern monument located in the Independent Park, and it contains the remains of the “fathers” of the country. This national monument in the Dominican Republic was made up of marble and it has three bodies representing the Holy Trinity and La Trinitaria, which was the most important movement of the revolutionary activism of the country. 5. Saltos Jima Waterfalls
The Jima River flows in the surrounding area of the city of Bonao, a famous natural monument in the Dominican Republic that is in its course, the Saltos Jima Waterfalls. The Jima River dies in the Camú River and springs from Las Neblinas scientific reserve. Where the Jima Waterfalls are located, it is between these two locations. 6. Obelisk
The popularly known as ‘Male Obelisk’ (in order to distinguish it from the ‘Female Obelisk’) has lost over the years the symbolic value with which it was erected. Designed in 1936, this famous monument in the Dominican Republic was constructed in 1937 as a monument of 40 meters of height to celebrate the change of name of the city of Santo Domingo to Trujillo City, under the command of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. It is an obelisk which can be seen from every point of the famous avenue. In 1966, the white structure was decorated with the works of different Dominican painters, giving, as a result, the colorful obelisk which stands in the current avenue.

7. Obelisco Hembra
The well-known ‘Female Obelisk’ (Obelisco Hembra), called this way to distinguish it from the ‘Male Obelisk’, is made by two monoliths. It was erected in 1947 to celebrate both the end of the debt with the US and the wished economical independence. It is counted as one of the best monuments in the Dominican Republic. It was constructed using white stone, but this simple monument has a huge meaning for the inhabitants of the island.

8. Monument to the heroes of Santomé Battle
Monument to the heroes of Santomé Battle portrays the battle in which the Dominican army won over the Haitians in their war for the Dominican independence so don’t forget to admire it. This battle took place on the 22nd of December 1855. This old monument in the Dominican Republic is placed on the roundabout that is located in the southern end of the Dominican Republic at the west entrance to the city of San Juan de la Maguana. Where the names of some of these heroes have been written down, on one of the monument’s sides there is a commemorative nameplate.

9. Cabo Francés Viejo

10. Fortaleza San Luis Fortress
Visit Fortaleza San Luis Fortress, one of the most important monuments in the Dominican Republic province of Santiago de los Caballeros. The construction of this fortress was already planned before 1660 to defend their borders from the French enemy. The Treaty of Basel, made in honor of King Louis XIV, was signed in it. Besides, in this fortress, it was hoisted the first Dominican flag. On the north side, you will find the clock tower, which is publicly exposed and formed by three bodies.
