St. Michael the Archangel’s church, Viļāni, was built in 1206 by the Bishop of Kurzeme, Pīteris, who established an archiepiscopal residence in Viļāni. The church served as a place of worship for locals and visitors for centuries until it was destroyed in 1656 during the Great Northern War. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Latvia.
