RELCCIL churches have been an important part of Latvian life since its founding. History: The RELCCIL was established in 1647 by a British missionary, the Reverend Robert Bruce. Under his guidance, a small group of Latvian believers gathered on October 13, 1647, and formed the Riga Evangelical Lutheran Church of Christ. Those present may have included Luther’s own son, Melanchthon, who was living in the city at the time and who had helped Bruce with the church’s founding. In the following centuries, RELCCIL churches spread across Latvia, generally supported by German and Swedish Lutheran missionaries. Facts & Statistics: The RELCCIL is a member of both the World Council of Churches and the Lutheran World Federation. In 2012, there were over 1,200 RELCCIL churches in Latvia with approximately 840,000 worshippers in active attendance. Today, around 52% of the population of Latvia identify as members of the RELCCIL.
