The church roots began in 1547 when Jan Blahoslav and his fellow reformers began preaching in the Czech lands. It was officially founded in 1620 under the name the Czech Brethren or the Unity of Brethren. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the church experienced a period of rapid growth and development. It produced some of the most influential theologians in the Czech lands such as Jan August Komensky and Jan Amos Koranda. In 1946 the church was nationalized by the newly formed communist party and its activities were severely curtailed or stopped. The church experienced a revival after the fall of communist rule in 1989. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Czechia.
