The kingdom of Thailand has a long and proud tradition when it comes to maritime trade. For centuries, Thailand has played an integral role in facilitating trade along the vast network of maritime trade routes in the Indian Ocean. In this blog, we take a look back at how Thailand acted as a key player in this historic exchange of goods and cultures.Thailand has been an important part of maritime trade from ancient times. As a major land bridge between India, China, and Southeast Asia, Thailand has served as a key port-of-call for seafaring traders for centuries. During the 7th century, Thailand had significant maritime trade with Britain, India, China, and other Asian countries. Ancient Thai merchants sailed the monsoon winds and exchanged goods such as tea, spices, silk, and jewels at numerous ports along the way. In the 15th to 17th centuries, Thailand thrived as an important silk and traded other commodities such as gold, silver, porcelain, and ivory. Thai rulers also controlled the lucrative tin trade in the Malacca Strait. During this period Thailand was also a center for shipbuilding and maritime technologies.
