Frihavnskirken was founded by social reformer and pietistic pastor N.F.S. Grundtvig who organized the first public gathering in the newly-constructed building in 1911. In 1913, the church was consecrated by Bishop Peder S. Malling, who believed that it would be a great asset to the social welfare of the area. The church has since then been actively used for religious and cultural events. It is also used as a venue for classical music concerts, lectures, and other activities.
