The St. Martin's Church stands on the same exact location as earlier rotunda churches, the first of which was built in the late 8th century. Over the centuries, reconstructions and renovations have taken place, with the current structure largely having been built from the early 15th century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Czechia.

St. Martin's Church is different from a standard Gothic building, as it has a six-storey spire as well as a mix of both Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. The spire was added to the original 9th century structure, and stands at a height of 83 meters. It is also believed that St. Martin's Church is the burial site of Henry the Elder, the founder of the Bohemian monarchy who died in 1290.
