Church of Our Lady of the Snows - Prague In Czechia: History,Facts, & Services

Church of Our Lady of the Snows - Prague In Czechia is a popular and important architectural and historical monument in the Czech Republic, located in the historic centre of Prague. It is the oldest Marian pilgrimage church in the Czech Republic, established in the first half of the 13th century. The first mention of the church dates back to 1234, when, after the death of the Czech Count Vok of Rožumberk, it was named as one of his foundation. The church was built in the Romanesque style and was originally served by Augustinian monks. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a Baroque style, and numerous additions were added, including a hemispherical dome inside the church. The name of the church is derived from a legend which tells of the Count Vok's daughter, who died of illness and was buried at the church. On the day of her funeral, it is said that it suddenly began to snow heavily inside the church, which led to the miracle-working intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In recognition of this miracle, the church was named Our Lady of the Snows (Miraculous Intercession at the Snows) and it has been a popular destination for pilgrims ever since. Today, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows features a number of important works of art, including the 18th century painted altarpiece by the Czech artist Karel Škréta, a 16th century column and 30 statues of saints and apostles, as well as a number of Baroque frescoes. Numerous regular services are held at the church each year and it also hosts musical events in its Baroque basilica. Minor renovations have been carried out in recent years, and the church is now open to the public.
