Where to Stay in Tokyo During Summer Olympics 2021

If you’re coming to the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2020 (2021), it’s worth staying close to the main event venues, but also close to shopping, restaurants, transportation, and other attractions. Deciding to stay in Tokyo during the Olympics will be the most important and urgent issue you need to resolve right after booking your plane and event tickets. Why do I say that? Because despite being a huge city, the 2021 Olympics is also a very big and important event and the capital will be full of millions of people. Which can only mean one thing: accommodations are booked very early in advance, even more than usual! Here are the best places to stay in Tokyo for Olympic Games.

Places to Stay in Tokyo on Olympics 2021

1. Tokyo Station Area

The area around Tokyo Station is the best choice because it is convenient for both the Heritage and the Tokyo Bay area and offers plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. It is also the transport hub of the city. This area includes parts of Marunouchi, Yurakucho, Ohtemachi, the Imperial Palace, and Nihombashi. This top place to stay in Tokyo for the Olympics provides excellent access to the surrounding areas and all major attractions.

2. Roppongi and Akasaka

This is our second choice because it is located in the Heritage Zone, so it is convenient to the Olympic Stadium and not too far from the Tokyo Bay venue zone. Roppongi is also a well-known area in Tokyo’s nightlife, so if you want to celebrate in the evening and have a glass of alcohol, there are plenty of great choices here for awesome bars, pubs and clubs!

3. Shinjuku

Shinjuku
Shinjuku

This is our third choice because it is close to the Heritage Zone and a great area for shopping, dining and sightseeing. It is also a major transport hub and is full of hotels. If you want to attend the opening and closing ceremony, Shinjuku is again a very good choice as both events will take place at the New National Stadium. In short, you simply can’t go wrong if you’re in this popular area of   Tokyo, close to the train station.

4. Ginza

Ginza is another wonderful option for those who want to be close to the Heritage Zone and the Gulf Zone. Ginza is very close to Tokyo Station, which is a great starting point for all types of travelers! Of course, being so close to Tokyo Station and so well connected to the rest of the city, but with its own train stations, Ginza offers one of the most fabulous opportunities for those who want to enjoy the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but also explore the major ones. and the best attractions that Tokyo has to offer. You will see that Ginza is really very charming, has a very local atmosphere and is also full of great restaurants and shopping.

5. Shibuya

Whether you stay here or not, Shibuya is a must-see, at least for the world-famous Shibuya crossing or the Hachiko statue. If you go there, you will see that Shibuya is full of authentic restaurants, cool shops and cozy cafes – plus lots of entertainment! As for sporting events, we play handball at Yoyogi National High School in Shibuya! This district is very close to the Heritage Zone and is a major shopping, dining, and sightseeing area. It is also full of hotels and has good transport links.

Just north of the Tokyo Station area, there are many good restaurants and hotels in the area north of Tokyo Station. They are close enough to the Tokyo Bay Zone and not too far from the Heritage Zone.

7. Tokyo Bay Zone

On the other hand, if you’re only visiting Tokyo for the Olympics, the Gulf of Tokyo would be a great base for you! The Bay Zone is located in the southeast of Tokyo and is considered a waterfront and an artificial island of Odaiba. A great feature of your stay in Odaiba is that it will be very close to the sites, so you probably won’t even have to use the hotel’s public transport.

9. Odaiba

There are several Olympic venues on this island in the Gulf of Tokyo, including water (swimming/diving) venues. There are a couple of hotels here. But keep in mind that this is a small tour to get to the rest of the city.

What If the Above Places Are All Booked Out?

Apparently, hotels, cottages, ryokan, and guesthouses will book the Tokyo Olympics early. So in some ways, the best place for the Olympics can be any place you can get (especially if you left things late). As a general rule, if you book the above places, try to stay as close as possible to the Heritage Zone or the Tokyo Bay Zone. Try to stay close to the train station or the metro. If you can’t find a place in Tokyo, here are some other places to try:

Yokohama: A self-contained large and attractive city, Yokohama has plenty of hotels and is connected to Tokyo by a number of trains, including the shinkansen, which takes just 15 minutes between the two cities.

Chiba: There are quite a few hotels in this city, about 50 minutes by train from Tokyo.

Kawasaki: It is an industrial city, about 25 minutes from Tokyo by train, and has many good hotel facilities.

If you can’t find places to stay in Tokyo during the Olympics in the above cities, check the cities of the shinkansen lines radiating from Tokyo, starting with the Tokaido line. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you can take unlimited tours with most shinkansen (Nozomi is not included). This allows you to stay quite far from Tokyo, but still within a reasonable travel time.
