UNESCO named Meghalaya’s cave on the list of Geological Site

Synopsis: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya took to tweeter to announce and share the news about the Mawmluh cave in Meghalaya, India. There is a pool inside the cave and it is formed by 5 different rivers that pass via caves.

One of the largest caves in India and the fourth longest in the Indian subcontinent, Mawmluh Caves is listed as the ‘First 100 IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences) Geological Sites’ by UNESCO. A proud moment for India, as it grabs yet another spot on the list of UNESCO. Mawmluh, one of the prominent caves in India has received its place on the crucial UNESCO list.  




The Chief Minister of Meghalaya took to tweeter to announce and share the news with the world. He tweeted “Mawmluh Cave in Sohra, Meghalaya is known for the ‘Meghalayan Age’ and has been selected by @theIUGS (@UNESCO) as one of the ‘FIRST 100 IUGS GEOLOGICAL SITES’ in the world. IUGS 60th Anniversary Event in Zumaia, Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark (Spain) will declare The First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites selected from 181 candidate sites from 56 countries.” 

Not many people are familiar with Mawmluh cave in Meghayala because Ajanta and Ellora caves are considered the most famous cave in India. It was first found by the British Lt. Yule in 1844. This cave is famous for its stalagmite formations and is situated at an altitude of 4503 m. 

Another fascinating thing about this cave is that there is a pool inside the cave and it is formed by 5 different rivers that pass via caves. Meghalaya is known as one of the rainiest places in the world and over the last 50 years, geologists from the US studied the development of Mawmluh cave.
