History

When the first spades penetrated the ground around Cu Chi, the region was covered with a rubber plantation attached to a French tire company. The first Vietnamese tunnels were excavated here by anti-colonial Vietnamese in the late 1940s; intended primarily for the storage of weapons, they soon became valuable places for the resistance fighters themselves. More than a decade later, VC activists in control of this strong anti-government area, many of the local villages, followed suit and went to the ground. By 1965, Cu Chi and the surrounding areas had 250km of tunnels crisscrossed – just across the Saigon River was the famous guerrilla power base known as the Iron Triangle – allowing the VC guerrilla cells in the area to link together. and infiltrate Saigon at will. One section was run underneath the American Cu Chi Army Base.
